Becoming A Certified Nursing Assistant

Do you want a rewarding career in the medical field, but are not sure how to get started? Do you want to be ready to work with patients in a short amount of time? Consider a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). CNAs work closely with patients, often under the supervision of other medical personnel. For some people, becoming a CNA will be a first step in preparing for a job in the medical field, and for others, it will become a career in itself. CNAs work in places such as private homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and anywhere else where there are patients who need help with daily tasks. They also will occasionally need to assist medical personnel with medical equipment and other tasks. Although they are not often mentioned, CNAs provide a vital role in patient care. They have the opportunity to not only help with the physical needs of the patients in their care, but to help them emotionally as well by talking and listening to them.

About the CNA Course

Once you have a high-school degree or the equivalent, you need to complete a course to become a CNA. This course is typically six to twelve weeks long and covers topics such as nutrition, anatomy, physiology, and information on infection control. You will also learn basic nursing skills and have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience. After the completion of this course, you will need to pass a CNA certification exam. Most courses will offer this at the end of the program. The exam may vary from state to state, as the regulations on certification vary. However, whatever state you are in, you can find practice tests online to help you prepare for the exam.

CNA courses are often offered at community colleges and medical facilities and are fairly inexpensive. Nursing is a career that will always be in demand, and nurses will always need caring assistants. One of the most important skills for becoming a CNA is compassion. If you are a considerate individual who desires to work with people, then you will find great joy in a career as a CNA.
